A Founder's Story

While doing some consulting work for Amy Levy PR, we decided to put the founder's story of our client on the website so we could drive stories to the website during National Childhood Obesity Month. His story of overcoming childhood obstacles and finding food solutions is inspirational. I wrote the story as a memoir in the first person.

Jonathan Heine’s Story - Part One

I’ve always struggled with my weight. My mother had severe eating disorders, which became my eating disorders at an early age (thanks Mom!). Mom was a “foodie,” an amazing chef and a published NYC food critic. There was always delicious food around: free meals at great new restaurants, deliveries of trendy foods to try, endless samples and food-centric parties. There was a lot of happy emotion around eating! It was part of our life since it was part of Mom’s work.

Jonathan Heine - Adolescence to Adulthood

Prior to adolescence I had reached over 200 pounds. As I entered my teens, I decided to take control and dieted obsessively.  I finally reached and maintained a healthy weight, but was still eating in unhealthy ways.  As I left college and entered the workforce, I started learning about fitness, but nutrition was still in its infancy.  Low fat, carb rich (food pyramid) diets of the early 90’s were in vogue, and I began gaining weight following these.  Paleo had not been conceived yet, and its indirect predecessor, Atkins, was often viewed by the medical community as dangerous, cholesterol inducing voodoo.

Jonathan Heine - I “Heart” Chocolate

I loved chocolate, but wanted a sugar free, lower in fat, soy free version, and began creating chocolate products, which were the predecessors to our chocolate cupcakes and truffles.

One day, a dear friend who was a severe Type II diabetic asked for my help.  In a similar business and with a similarly demanding schedule, his feet were purple, and he had started using insulin.  We worked together for a few months and his symptoms disappeared.  After some tests, his doctor was amazed and he no longer needed insulin injections.
